I want to share one of my favorite craft activities for kids at Christmastime. It’s very easy, but can keep the kids entertained for a long time! If you have trouble keeping the kids away from your actual Christmas tree, let them make their own! My boys and I worked on one last year and they thought it was so much fun! We hung it up on my youngest son’s bedroom door. Here’s a pic while it was still in progress:
I used green poster board (could also use wrapping paper) to cut out the shape of a tree. (You can cut three triangles and overlap them.) I made a star from yellow construction paper and a tree trunk out of brown construction paper. For the ornaments, I used these FREE printable Blank Christmas Ornaments. The kids can decorate the ornaments with crayons, markers, glitter, etc. Once you’re finished, cut out the ornaments and tape or glue them to the tree.
Here’s a close-up shot of our ornaments. As you can see, we made lots of different designs. I love the red and green plaid ornament on the right side. I used a ruler to draw straight lines and made the lines in varying widths to create that cool plaid pattern.
Here’s another variation on this idea: When I was a music teacher, I put a large tree in the main hallway of the school and had each of my students create an ornament for it. The students put the name of their favorite Christmas song on their ornament, so we were able to see which Christmas songs were most popular.
You can make this project as simple or as elaborate as you want it to be. Pictured below is a tree I did with my Children’s Church class. I used green foil wrapping paper and added a lightweight garland to decorate the tree even more. We actually used printable ornaments with the Names of Jesus that I found here.
This is a great activity for schools, daycares, churches, scout troops, or families. Print out these FREE Blank Christmas Ornaments and let your kids have some artistic holiday fun! Send me a picture of your completed tree and I might add it to this page.
By the way, if you have any trouble printing the ornaments please let me know. Thanks!
